9.08pm Update

The team at the PAS IT centre has reported that the tallying process has stopped as PAS has declared victory based on unofficial reports that PAS has won by a majority of 2,616.

The numbers on the various sources don’t really tally. Probably the numbers were taken at different points during the count, as it is still on-going. But generally, it appears that PAS has won the KT seat!

Great news for me!

Good night people.

Kuala Terengganu votes

Today is the day that Kuala Terengganu voters will be going out to cast their vote for the second time within the time-frame of one year.

During the last elections, the Barisan candidate won by a slim majority of 600+. I say slim, considering that the total number of registered voters amount to more than 80,ooo. That makes out to only a 0.7% majority. Stats can be found HERE.

I don’t do political analysis very well, and not being there only adds to my incompetency of writing much about what I think it’s going to turn out like.

Simply said, I have no idea what the results tonight will turn out to be like.

Is the so-called “Chinese swing” as important as some make it out to be? Will the so-called “Malay votes” be split 50-50?

I’ll be waiting up tonight to catch the final results before ending my day. And though I have no idea what the general vibe is like all the way back in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia, I’m hoping to see PAS win the seat this time, and with a higher majority than just 0.7%.

What’s with the pig head?

From Malaysiakini (subscription required):

A Universiti Malaya student was shocked to discover a pig head placed on a PAS flag in a surau located in the Islamic studies academy.

This unprecedented incident comes as students from both the anti-establishment (pro-Mahasiswa) and pro-establishment (pro-Aspirasi) factions gear up for the Jan 19 campus polls.

My father always tells me, to see where our country is headed to, just look at the quality of students we have in our tertiary institutions, and you should have a fair idea of what lies in our nation’s future.

Frankly, being in the golongan belia myself, I’m not seeing a particularly bright picture being painted.

I mean, seriously. A pig head, in a surau no less, and in the Islamic studies academy!

Campaigning for campus polls shouldn’t be this ugly. In fact, NOTHING should be this ugly.

So. What has gone wrong?

Let’s read the Quran

lrtqlogo200901

I came across this logo just now while visiting Walski’s Asylum. It is a blogger initiative, a month-long campaign to encourage people to read and understand the Quran. A great initiative, methinks.

I’ve always been meaning to read the Quran, but I’ve been having difficulty understanding the context, and the meanings of the texts. With this campaign, which starts today, I’m hoping that I’ll be reading a lot of interesting posts from the bloggers who are participating in this campaign. My hopes are that by Valentine’s Day this year, I’ll know a whole lot more about Islam and the Quran than I do today.

A. Asohan: Enough is enough

A. Asohan writes on what he thinks about the “war” in Gaza. He starts off with:

OKAY, time for a rant. Don’t expect a well-reasoned argument or a nuanced stance. Don’t even expect coherence or professional wordcraft here. Forget about journalistic objectivity or a professional code of ethics, seeing both sides of the story or walking in another man’s moccasins. I don’t care about the supposed political complexities, cultural sensitivities or historical subtleties.

Not when you start killing innocent people. Especially not when you start killing children.

And he ends with:

This is not an issue about religion, despite how some are painting it. No, neither are these atrocities against the Muslim world, despite what some politicians say. Such beliefs have led to a mess of misconceived statements and intentions, such as boycotting American products or sending in the troops to fight for a regime that doesn’t have an exactly spotless conscience either.

No, this is a humanitarian issue. It’s as simple as this: There is a bunch of people killing children. What is the world community – what are we – going to do about it?
