Hishammuddin says sorry..finallyPosted: April 26, 2008
Hishammuddin has finally decided to shoulder some of the blame for UMNO’s dismal loss in the last GE. Just a few days before, he was adamant about the keris not being an issue during the last general elections, and denied that the keris-wielding could have contributed to the loss. I wrote about it here.
Hishammuddin says sorry for wielding the keris
KUALA LUMPUR, April 25 (Bernama) — Umno Youth Chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein Friday apologised to the Malays and non-Malays for wielding keris two years ago.
Hishammuddin said as a responsible party leader, he should apologise if his action in wielding the “Panca Warisan” keris at the Umno Youth general assembly, contributed to the Barisan Nasional (BN)’s losses in five states in the March 8 general election.
He said the keris issue was among those being brought up openly at the Barisan Nasional (BN) youth committee meeting to look at the reasons for the BN’s dismal performance in the election.
“I told them that I’m responsible for what I’ve done. If it had affected the performance (of the BN), we cannot run away from the reality.
“If the issue had affected anyone, I apologise to the non-Malays and the Malays,” he told reporters after chairing the three-hour meeting from 3.30pm at the Menara Dato Onn here Friday.
“(I apologise) to the non-Malays for making them feel apprehensive about (the keris) symbol, and to the Malays for not being able to defend our symbol of heritage. (The wielding of the keris) is not what it was made out to be,” he said.

It’s sad to see that they had to take such a beating in the last general elections, and to lose 5 states, before they could see their mistakes, as Tok Mommy has mentioned. Even when there were people who were unhappy about the keris before the elections, they merely brushed these voices off as being ignorant to Malay culture.
But admittedly, just the keris and Hishammuddin alone did not bring BN and UMNO down. It was not entirely his fault. Even in the same keris issue, it is not all Hishammuddin’s fault. He probably sparked some fire amongst the Malays who found his actions too much, but I believe, and have reason to believe so, that most Chinese Malaysians were more raged by MCA’s silent reaction towards this issue.
Hishammuddin has publicly apologised. That’s a start. But it’s quite too late now.
Well, at least we know that the BN youth committee meeting is actually of some good, and not all show.
UPDATE: Seems like this is a non-apology. Read this from Malaysiakini:
Keris: Hisham mohon maaf
“Saya minta maaf pada orang bukan Melayu kerana telah menakut-nakutkan mereka dan kepada orang Melayu kerana gagal mempertahankan simbol warisan orang Melayu.”
So was that an apology or not? Read this for another opinion on this “apology”.
