Mukhriz decides to stay in UMNO (UPDATED)

This was on the StarOnline at 4:10pm Malaysian time.

KUALA LUMPUR: Jerlun MP Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir is having a press conference at 5.30pm Tuesday.

He is expected to announce his position following his father Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s decision to quit Umno.

It is now 5:42pm Malaysian time. Meaning the press conference would be underway. I’ll keep you posted.

So Mukhriz has decided to stay after all! I wonder what his dad will think of that?

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth executive council member Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said he is not resigning from Umno, but reiterated his call for Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi to step down as prime minister and party president.

This is quite explosive. Although I kind of expected in a way that Mukhriz would stay put. He has more on his shoulders than Dr M has. His father can afford to leave UMNO, because he doesn’t need to care about his political career. It has already ended. But the same can’t be said for Mukhriz, because his political career is just starting.

Would Dr M agree with Mukhriz’s stand to NOT leave UMNO with him? Or maybe they had planned it so that Mukhriz would fight Pak Lah from the inside, and Dr M from out? After all, in all the speeches and articles about his quitting from UMNO, not once did he mention about his son.

Could it be that they were both in on the plan together?

On the contrary, it appears that Dr M and Mukhriz did NOT have any discussion prior to Dr M’s decision to quit, and Mukhriz’ decision to stay, as reported by Malaysiakini:

Are we seeing in Mukhriz an independent mind?

But who knows, really, what goes on di belakang tabir.
