No confidence for PM

.. And surprise, surprise, the vote of no confidence is NOT going to be tabled by any one of the opposition. In fact, it is going to come from within BN itself, SAPP. It’s slightly surprising, thinking that SAPP was also the party that said they supported the Prime Minister, I think about half a month ago. I could be wrong.

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) has lost confidence in Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, it said at a press conference here Wednesday.

In the coming sitting of the Parliament session on Monday, its two Members of Parliament will support a vote of no confidence against the Prime Minister, the party said.

Whether its MPs table the vote of no confidence, or whether other MPs will do it, would be determined in due course, it said in a statement.

Oh, so SAPP is going to SUPPORT a vote of no confidence. I got my facts slightly wrong.

But still, voting no confidence against the leader of the political alliance that they themselves are part of speaks volumes of what they think of the leadership, and how unstable the ties within that alliance are. BN has been on shaky ground ever since GE2008. Or perhaps we have only seen the ground shake under them like an earthquake with a magnitude of 9, because they’ve been too good at hiding it before this. The tsunami let all the rats out.

But then, even with this mind-blowing announcement, Nazri the guy in charge of Parliament just HAD to make another statement. And now he’s sounding like a poor boy who just got his lolli stolen.

KUALA LUMPUR: The vote of no confidence against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi cannot be tabled on Monday as this has to be done in accordance with the Standing Orders of the Dewan Rakyat, said Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz.

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department who is in charge of Parliament said that under Standing Orders rule 27, a notice for any motion had to be given in writing 14 days in advance.

“So far, no such motion has been given as yet,” he said when contacted.

Alternatively, Nazri said the vote of no confidence could be tabled through an emergency motion under Standing Orders rule 18(1).

He said this however had to fulfil three criteria — it has to be a definite matter, urgent and of public interest.

In such a case, he said, it required only a day’s notice.

“It would be up to the Speaker to decide whether to allow it or not. The Speaker wields a lot of power,” he said.

He has officially made it into my books as a whiny sour grape.

Which part of deciding whether our representatives in the Dewan is not a definite matter, urgent and of public interest? Hello? We’re talking about the leader of our country here?

I mean, seriously. IF a motion like this does get tabled, and the Speaker doesn’t allow it, then the Speaker might as well fire himself.

But the whole point of this is not about the tabling of the motion. It’s about SAPP making their stand public, even before any motion gets tabled. They’re making public their dissatisfaction of Pak Lah, and BN on the whole, before ANYONE knows anything about any voting of no confidence.

And even before any vote of no confidence gets passed, there’s sure to be a huge dent in Pak Lah’s confidence right this minute. The Malaysian Insider has it put in very clear words:

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — No matter what spin is applied Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today suffered a blow to his stature as the leader of Malaysia.

It does not matter whether Parliament Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia will allow the two Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) MPs to table a motion of no confidence against the prime minister on Monday.

It does not matter that the procedure to table a motion has not been followed (14 days notice must be given). It does not even matter whether the motion is defeated soundly on the House floor as it is likely to be.

By announcing their plan to table a motion of no confidence, Datuk Yong Teck Lee and the SAPP have already achieved what they set out to do – embarrass and humiliate Abdullah.

This is going to be very very interesting.
