UPDATE: All 9 were released on bail this morning at 4.30am
Received this in my email this morning. More arrests.
The authorities has once again showed intolerance towards peaceful assembly when 7 individuals were arrested tonight during a gathering organised by the Abolish ISA Movement (GMI).
GMI is organising a big rally, Malam Himpunan Mansuh ISA, next year on March 2009. The launch of Malam Himpunan Mansuh ISA was scheduled to be held at Dataran MPAJ, Pandan Indah at 9.00pm tonight.
Before the scheduled time, the police had set up roadblocks at roads leading to Dataran MPAJ. Despite that, by 9.00pm a crowd had gathered at the field for the event.
At about 9.30pm, Mohamad Sabu, Vice President of PAS, addressed the crowd that had gathered and was making an announcement to call off the event when the police came onto the stage and asked for the organisers to stop the event. During the process of negotiation between the organisers and the police, 7 individuals were arrested.
Those arrested are currently held at the Pandan Indah Police Station (03-9274 222). SUARAM urges you to call the police station to urge for their immediate and unconditional release of the 7 individuals.
SUARAM strongly condemns the police for their ongoing attacks on freedom of assembly, a fundamental right which is guaranteed under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Federal Constitution of Malaysia. We demand for the immediate and unconditional release of all those arrested.
SUARAM has been informed that YB Salahuddin Ayub, parliamentarian of Kubang Kerian, and Mohamad Sabu, Vice President of PAS, has been arrested by the police.
They were arrested at the Pandan Indah Police Station when they went to visit the 7 individuals who were arrested earlier at the launch of Malam Himpunan Mansuh ISA at Dataran MPAJ.
The nine who are arrested:
- YB Salahuddin Ayub
- Mohamad Sabu
- Mohd Sani Hamzan
- Saripuddin Mohd Yatim
- Abdullah A. Rahman
- Mohd Amir Ali Mohd Shah
- Hafiz Zulkifli

SUARAM has also been informed that lawyers are not allowed to enter the police station although members of the press are allowed into the compound of the police station.
SUARAM strongly condemns the arbitrary arrest of YB Salahuddin Ayub and Mohamad Sabu and the other seven individuals. SUARAM also condemns the act of disallowing lawyers from access to the detainees. We demand for the immediate and unconditional release of the nine individuals.
