Volunteer arrested while leafleting, now out on bail

I just received this email from SUARAM. If a volunteer can be arrested while leafleting, it’s a sad sad case.

I also received an earlier email containing the details of the volunteeer who was arrested. That email was also put up on Susan’s blog HERE.

*********************

A volunteer who has been arrested today at Merbau Pulas, Kedah, has been released under the police bail around 7.50pm. Ruben was arrested today for leafleting leaflets containing demands of JERIT’s Bicycle campaign.

SUARAM would like to thank everyone for their kind attention to this urgent matter. On the other hand, SUARAM also strongly condemns government’s ongoing crackdown on freedom of expression. We would like to remind the government that freedom of expression is guaranteed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as the Federal Constitution of Malaysia.

Background

JERIT or Oppressed People’s Movement is organizing a cycling campaign throughout the nation to put forward six demands to the Prime Minister of Malaysia. The campaign officially began yesterday at Wisma Darul Aman Kedah. 50 cyclists have been flagged off from Wisma Darul Aman and they would cycle for sixteen days through Kedah, Penang, Perak, and Selangor. On 18th December they will handover a memorandum to the Prime Minister in Parliament.

  1. Michelle,

I am not surprised. I was arrested for playing my guitar and singing a song of freedom and my bail has been extended for another 2 months. Fact is, we are at their mercy.

    Sad but true.
