Merry Christmas

Here’s wishing everyone who reads this, Merry Christmas, and Happy Holidays. In case I’m not back yet, here’s wishing everyone a very Happy New Year too.

And here’s hoping that we’ll see a brighter year ahead, for ourselves and for Malaysia as well.

It is Christmas time. There are some 2nd hand booksale in a shopping mall. As I browsed through the book ‘The Proper Study of Mankind’ by Isaiah Berlin, suddenly I heard a voice and I turned around, he said,”You are interested in reading?’ Obviously yes, and what a smart way to talk to strangers.

    ‘Do you believe in God?’
‘No. I don’t believe in God. But I believe in godliness.’He looked a bit puzzled.
‘We are all imperfect.God is perfect.’
‘Perfection can only exist in the mind. We cannot draw a perfect circle. The pen is imperfect, the paper is imperfect. A perfect circle exist only in the mind.’
‘I am not talking about Plato’s idea of perfect image.’
‘We cannot define God. God cannot be defined. Whatever that you can define will be smaller than the concept that you used to define.God becomes small.’
‘You are saying God is indescribable? We call it ineffable. It is a mystery.God is creator. We have a spirit and body.Christ becomes flesh to save us.’
‘The concept of God always carry a contradiction. God creates everything. It creates evil also. Right? It cannot create a stone so heavy that it cannot lift up. Right?’
‘It is not a contradiction. It is more of a paradox.’
‘Which is higher? The contradiction or the paradox?’
    ‘The paradox.’
‘I agree. The logical mind cannot touch God.A paradox dissolves the logic. But, can you see your own physical eye? Unless we have a mirror. Is God inside our eyes or outside? We cannot see God with our physical eyes. We need a mirror of the mind. God is the mirror and mirror is the God.’
‘Man is made in the image of God.’
‘It is also logically possible that God is made in the image of man.If man is a mosquito, God will have wings and tentacles. Anyway, I think the mirror in man reflects God.’
‘But what do you believe in, if you don’t mind me asking?’
‘No-thing-ness. God is not a noun but an adverb. It is not nothingness. It is a paradox.’

Then, I suddenly caught the soothing sound of ‘Silent Night, Holy Night’ from an old man playing some musical instrument.

It was time, I had to go. He thanked me for engaging him in this way. So, I am glad to have encountered someone who is sincere to his beliefs.

When greed and hatred are silent, the heart becomes holy. The mind has to go through and beyond the dark night of the soul before it encounters God or godliness.

    ‘Merry Christmas!’
Merry Christmas Gadfly. Was a good story. It’s been good having you and your ideas around. 🙂
