Where is the love?

From the Malaysian Insider HERE (highlights my own):

A group of Malay-Muslim protesters claiming to be residents of Section 23 have threatened bloodshed unless the state government stopped the construction of a Hindu Temple.Amid chants of “Allahuakbar,” the group also left the severed head of a cow at the entrance of the State Secretariat here as a warning to Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim.

[…]

“I challenge YB Khalid, YB Rodziah and Xavier Jeyakumar to go on with the temple construction. I guarantee bloodshed and racial tension will happen if this goes on, and the state will be held responsible,” shouted Ibrahim Haji Sabri amid strong chants of “Allahu Akbar!”

Ibrahim identified himself as the Deputy Chairman of the Resident’s Committee against the building of the temple in S23 here, which is perceived by some as being a Muslim majority area.

[…]

Mohd. Zurit Bin Ramli, who claims to be the secretary of the “Coalition of Malaysian NGOs” echoed Ibrahim’s stand on the matter, saying that it was irresponsible on the part of the state government to approve the construction as there was apparently a “90 per cent” majority Muslim population in Section 23.“With a temple on our residential area, we cannot function properly as Muslims. The temple will disrupt our daily activities like prayers in the Surau. We cannot concentrate with the sounds coming from the temple,” stated Zurit.

There is absolutely zero decency in this.

This group of individuals give Islam a very bad name. The Islam I know is nothing like what they are exemplifying here.

I may not be Muslim, but I know that Islam does not condone violence. Islam does not condone racial or religious segregation. Islam encourages acceptance and respect amongst different people who are of different faiths.

Islam is not like this.

I am now so disturbed, words fail me.

They actually brought a severed head of a cow to the State Secretariat building. They wouldn’t have done that if they didn’t know that the cow is sacred in Hinduism. And yet they did that, knowingly disrespecting those of the Hindu faith.

They said that with the temple in the residential area, they ‘cannot function properly as Muslims’. I don’t believe this. I believe that Muslims who believe strongly in their own faith can and will find it in themselves to respect the need of people from other faiths to fulfill their religious obligations. I believe that they can and will find in themselves their connection to Allah, whether or not there is a temple nearby.

I believe Muslims who believe strongly in their own faith will not do something like this.

Islam is. Not. Like. This.

This is beyond any damned line we can draw. It’s beyond political, beyond racial, and beyond religious lines. Human decency crosses all those lines. This action crosses all lines of human decency.

    Michelle,

Unfortunately, there are still some Muslims in Malaysia who have very narrow-minded opinions of other religions. I do not wish to apologise for this group of people because they have brought shame to the religion of Islam.

It is clear to see that the protest is politically motivated from the reference to YB Khalid Samad (PAS MP for Shah Alam) and YB Rodziah Ismail (PKR Adun for Batu Tiga). The group has misused Islam to justify their disgusting actions. I have read elsewhere that KJ has denounced this group. Let’s see if other government leaders speak out.

Really? & I wonder what people think about this.

“The Koran contains contradictory statements like other religious books, but the Koran itself provides the reader with a way to know what to do with contradictions. In the Koran, it says if you have two passages that contradict each other, the one written later supersedes the one written earlier. A passage written later abrogates (makes null and void) passages written earlier that contradict it. It says so right there in the Koran. Most westerners don’t know this. And they are unaware that the peaceful, tolerant passages were written early in Mohammad’s prophetic career. According to the Koran, those passages have been overwritten by later, more violent, less tolerant passages.” (continue reading):

I don’t know *enough* about what is written in the Quran. My own belief is that no religion teaches violence. And I stand by that belief. If there are people who are violent and/or intolerant in the name of their religion, I take it that the person is at fault, and not the religion itself.

If there are any readers out there who would like to respond to Surind’s comment, I ask for intelligent discourse.

      hi there,

I think you better check your source, because I myself do not agree with what’s written in the article. That article sounded a bit more like pro-terrorism, where as a matter of fact, it is not. I do not remember even a tiny bit in the teachings that taught Muslims to be violent, unless they are threatened, i.e. self protection.

Me myself who has been living abroad at a non-Muslim country for so long, have never heard of any pro-terrorism preach during any Friday prayers, and I myself believe that in Malaysia they do not teach that too.

In any case, as a Malaysian who stays abroad, I am ashamed with the act that citizens of Seksyen 23 had done, and I have seen so many status updates on Facebook condemning the act (even by the Malays) which shows how ashamed they were to hear of that incident. Those fellas never learnt their lesson. They kept on bringing shame on their own people by making scenes at the ‘meet-up’ with the MB. I am so ashamed that there are still people like this in Malaysia, and to make it worse, they are from Shah Alam, a place thought to be civilized enough for incidents like this do not happen.

Hi Michelle, regret reading this post. Gosh, and Merdeka day is on Monday too.
    And the year is 2009.
I guess there will always be such people, and by this I include even some other religions….to think we all worship or pray to the same God or his messenger.
I guess there’s politics involved here.
Anyway, have a nice weekend, best regards, Lee.

    “No religion teaches violence.”

This requires qualification. No pacifist religion teaches violence.

Islam like Christianity or Judaism is not a pacifist religion: Under no conditions whatsover shall violence be used.

Their question is whether war is just.

Blog Owner’s note: I’ve deleted the entire comment here. I am leaving a note here only to let the person who left the comment know that I’ve read it, and have decided that I don’t want things like that on my blog. I don’t apologize for it. And I do hope that you don’t leave such rude comments on this site anymore. I welcome views that are different from mine, but I do not appreciate racism in any form or manner.

  8. Hi Michelle

How are you doing? Am glad that you are one of the few who blogged about the rape of Penan girls right from a very early stage. The truth is out now and what remains to be seen is the action to be taken. Please keep up the great blogging.

On a more serious note,I am about to ask you for an act of kindness. Another lady blogger has brought to my attention that a fellow blogger is suffering from a kind of cancer and she could lose her eyesight if she doesn’t get enough money for her operation. I have tagged you to do a meme to create awareness of her condition. Please visit my blog for details tomorrow as I am scheduling my meme for 6 am tomorrow (Sunday) and have tagged Crankster, Lita, Chahya and you. Thanks.

    Take care.

    Blessings to you and yours.
