Sin Chew reporter Tan Hoon Cheng released

According to Anil Netto:

Just received word at 3.40pm that the Sin Chew Daily reporter, Tan Hoon Cheng, has been released by Bukit Aman. Awaiting official confirmation.

If this is true, I’m thankful. ADDED: Has been confirmed. She is now back at home in Bukit Mertajam

However, this is worth thinking about:

[Syed Hamid Albar] said Tan was detained under Section 73(1) of the Act in order to ensure her safety as police intelligence indicated that there were threats to her life after she reported on Bukit Bendera division Umno chairman Datuk Ahmad Ismail’s allegedly racist remarks. The StarOnline

Excuse me. Say WHAT?

Is Syed Hamid Albar saying that they ARRESTED the lady in order to ensure her personal safety?

You ARREST someone you want to protect? And not under any Tom Dick Harry law, you arrest the lady under the INTERNAL SECURITY ACT?

What happened to “police custody”?

Oh, oh. And have the police taken care of those who had threatened her life? Because if they have yet to find any of those people, then is her life not still in danger?

Or is it suddenly her personal safety doesn’t warrant a detention under ISA anymore?

What absolute bollocks.

Whatever it is, the solidarity vigils are still on. RPK, Teresa Kok and almost 70 other people are still detained under ISA. Read HERE for details of the vigils.

To quote a friend of mine: The existence of the ISA is equivalent to the non-existence of basic human rights. Ponder that.

If you’re having a problem keeping calm, read Haris HERE. So far, Haris is still fine.

The notion of arresting for personal safety is so ludicrous, that I can’t believe he isn’t ashamed to say it out loud.

When a non-bumiputra journalist uncover an umnoputra seditious statement to incite violence against minority, she is considered a threat to national security because her report alerted right thinking Malaysians,it’s not unreasonable to expect explanation of that nature come out from umnoputra minister in Malaysia.

  5. bow says:

The purpose is to intimidate her for reporting about umnoputra seditious speech. Police want to use her to set an example on any Malaysia’s media intend to expose umno racist politic in Malaysia. Guess they have achieved the goal.
