What I saw at uni today..

There was an exhibition of first, second and third year photography student work at my university today. My heart popped out slightly when I saw this particular composition. It may not be relevant to Malaysia, but I think it’s worth thinking about. These photos (of photos) are worth more than a thousand words.

    Dear Su,

Pictures and all forms of visual presentation convey the message more graphically. They speak a thousand words.

The pictures you posted are relevant wherever the people are suppressed and oppressed with draconian and high-handed laws by the police at the behest of the powers of the day.

The use of such arbitrary laws dehumanises innocent people and takes away their dignity. Their crime most often being that they were brave enough to speak up for the downtrodden and marginalised members of the society.

Most of the pictures if displayed at an anti-ISA rally in Malaysia, would have gone unnoticed except for the fact that the people championing the cause are mat sallehs.

I did a little piece on the abolishment of the ISA based on one of your photographs. I would like to dedicate this one to you, a most extraordinary girl.

Thank you. You’re too kind, I’m quite ordinary, really. But still, thank you.

ISA is such a dehumanize piece of legislation for a democratic country of us, it is constantly being abused by minister for political purposes rather than security purpose. But it does provide a lethal mean for ruling elites to strike political opponent effectively to remain in power forever judging from the past. Dr M. used it so often to stay in power for 22 years in Malaysia.
